Quantum Mesh Independently Develops High-Efficiency Liquid Immersion Cooling System “KAMUI” for Data Centers, Launching Japan’s First Commercial Deployment※1

Utilizing ENEOS's Immersion Cooling Fluid "ENEOS IX Type-J" to Achieve a 32% Reduction in Power Consumption Compared to Conventional Air Cooling

Quantum Mesh Inc. (Pronunciation: Quantum Mesh / Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Hiroyuki Shinohara; hereinafter "Quantum Mesh") announces that it has developed "KAMUI," a high-efficiency liquid immersion cooling system (patent pending). This system adopts "ENEOS IX Type-J," an immersion cooling fluid for server cooling provided by ENEOS Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and President: Atsuji Yamaguchi; hereinafter "ENEOS"). This marks Japan's first commercial deployment※1 of a container-type liquid immersion cooling data center utilizing liquid immersion cooling technology.

While the rapid progress of AI, particularly the globally expanding utilization of Generative AI, continues to drive up demand for data center establishment, conventional air-cooling systems—currently the mainstream—face major challenges under warming environmental conditions, such as massive power requirements, associated costs, and installation space constraints. Furthermore, due to the increasing power output of servers themselves, traditional air-cooling systems are anticipated to be insufficient to guarantee adequate cooling environments.

"KAMUI" is a closed-loop, single-phase liquid immersion cooling system independently developed by Quantum Mesh. The system works by immersing servers directly into a coolant, allowing for highly efficient absorption of the heat generated by the equipment. In the development of "KAMUI," "ENEOS IX Type-J," which realizes high cooling efficiency, was adopted.

By exchanging heat between the coolant, which is warmed by the servers, and groundwater, which maintains a stable temperature of 14–18°C throughout the year, the electricity required for cooling is reduced to less than one-tenth that of conventional air-cooling systems. This enables the data center to achieve an overall PUE※2 of 1.03–1.04, achieving an approximate 32% reduction in overall power consumption compared to traditional data centers. Furthermore, since large-scale air conditioning facilities are unnecessary, initial capital expenditures can be significantly reduced.

In addition, the installation space is successfully minimized to within 1/5 to 1/3 of traditional systems. The cooling method utilizing groundwater eliminates the need for outdoor air conditioning units, indoor chillers, and air conditioning equipment. One "KAMUI" unit can accommodate servers up to 16U (8 servers in the case of 2U servers) with high-density installation and operation. In the 20-foot container-type data centers promoted by the company, up to 12 units of "KAMUI" (equivalent to 96 units of 2U servers) can be accommodated.

Quantum Mesh will continue to advance research on "KAMUI" to develop liquid immersion cooling systems that pursue even higher efficiency. In addition, the company will work on product commercialization based on "KAMUI," striving to construct digital infrastructure that safely stores and operates massive amounts of circulating data in the AIoT era.

※1: Based on the company's industry research (as of March 10, 2025). As a container-type data center utilizing the liquid immersion cooling method.

※2: PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) is an index showing the energy usage efficiency of data centers, where a value closer to 1 indicates a lower proportion of power consumed by devices other than IT equipment. The PUE of general air-cooled data centers in Japan is typically considered to be 1.50.
